Cindy made a comment in my post about using the XL Sizzix scalloped card die in a Cuttlebug. I thought that her suggestion was brilliant, so I tested it and wanted to post it here as an addendum.
Up above you see the two B plates sandwiched around the Sizzix XL scalloped card die and cardstock. What's different is that this is a 4 1/2" X 12" piece of cardstock that has already been scored and folded! Such a simple change, but it makes using this die with the undersized plates so much easier and foolproof! You know that's what I'm always going for around here, eh?
So, line up the fold of the card with the scoring edge of the die, run it through the Cuttlebug and....
Perfect! No stray creases. Placement is easy because there's no guesswork involved. This is excellent! Way to go, Cindy! Thank you so much for sharing that brainstorm. :-)
So, this will work out great for the scalloped card die and to a certain extent with the other card dies, too. Not sure that it can be expanded for use with some of the other XL Sizzix dies, like the boxes, bags, or the onesie--I don't have any of those to test. For those you might still have to just deal with the crease left by the edge of the too short clear plate unless the design is such that you can roll it almost all the way through, but back out before getting to that trailing edge, then roll through again from the other direction.
Ahhh, that's what I love about the crafting community, the willingness to share and exchange ideas. :-)
Edited to add: Yep, doesn't it figure that I've come up with another workaround for this. Click to read my latest workaround for using these XL dies in the Cuttlebug.
Welcome to Indigo Inklings. This is where I talk about some of my rubber stamping projects and digital graphics. My blog name comes from the fact that I love the color indigo, and I think the notion of inklings covers my introspective side as well as my love for getting inky with my projects. I hope you find something here to interest or inspire you.

Hey, Jay, you're making me blush. You're the creative genius here! Mine was only a little comment, made because you put me in the right frame of mind to think about it and how it could work for me :) Thank you for the addendum! Weather permitting, I'm off to Michaels tomorrow with coupon in hand:)
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate you sharing this with us, as I'm a CB owner, and not a Sizzix cutter owner, and prefer to stay that way! Don't want to miss out on all the excitement though, with the larger dies!
ReplyDeleteGlad you're finding some of the information here useful. I know that there are a lot of Cuttlebug owners out there and I'd hate for anyone to feel like what I do here only works with the Big Shot. Plus, not everyone wants to have more than one die cutter if one will do the trick for them. I picked up the C'bug as a back up in case anything happened to my Big Shot--I couldn't pass up the good deal--so it's just a matter of pulling it out and writing things up from the C'bug point of view.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by! :-)
Wow! Jay, your posts on the sizzix/cuttlebug are brilliant. Thanks so much for all of this great information! :O)
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to let you know your website is very helpful and tht I will create a profile later, however, until I do I wanted to comment and let all of you know that on the
ReplyDeleteCuttlebug I tried the B Plate, Sizzix Bigz die, cardstock, and 2nd B plate. It worked great AND above it was mentioned that you weren't sure about whether any of the box dies worked very well. Well, let me assure you that it works with the boxes perfectly!
The one that I used was from Stampin' Up and I actually used the Bigz XL Die-it is the Matchbox die and makes the cutest little box that can hold 4 Hershey's Hugs candies perfectly. It also has the casing to cover the box on the die. After I read the combination of Cuttlebug plates, I went and tried this and VOILA! It worked perfectly and the creases to score the box worked perfectly!!! I cannot wait to make Valetines gifts for people with this new die!!
Just thought that I would let everyone know.
Happy CuttleBug cutting!!
Hello.I recently found your blog. I just wanted to tell you, you have SO much info on things I have been searching for on the 'net, about sandwiches, how-to's, etc. Your information is so detailed, and the illustrations make it easier to understand. I am in AWE of your talent. Thanks for sharing with us.

After reading the first post, I also had the idea to just fold the cardstock and run it through once. This obviously would only work for symmetrical dies.
ReplyDeleteFor non-symmetrical dies, I use a couple of very small pieces of sticky tape to hold the cardstock onto the die, then you don't have to worry about the cardstock moving and getting double score lines, or inaccurate cutting.
